After a one-sided 4-0 victory over the Spokane Spiders on Friday night, the Portland Timbers U23 raised their scoring prowess to the next level as seven different players would find the net in a 8-2 victory over the Yakima Reds, with midfielder Brent Richards scoring twice. Tracy Hasson, Josh Brown, Sterling Flunder, Daniel Leach, Warren Ukah and Ryan Youngblood also scored for the Timbers, while Tyler Penn and 2008 PDL MVP Junior Garcia scored for Yakima. This was the second US Open Cup qualifier for the Timbers U23s, who are in good shape after winning their first qualifer 4-0 over Spokane on Friday night.

It didn’t take long for the Timbers’ attack to put one in the Yakima goal, when in the 8th minute, of a corner kick, the ball was headed back to the center of the Yakima box, and fell to the feet of defender Josh Brown, who blasted home the goal for an early 1-0 Portland lead. Just three minutes later, the Timbers doubled their lead when Logan Emory found Tracy Hasson at the far post, and he knocked home the shot for the 2-0 early lead.

In the 23rd minute, after controlling much of the possession up to that point, the Timbers had a great chance to widen their lead when Warren Ukah slipped in behind the defense and caused Yakima goalkeeper Maurcio Sanchez to charge out of the box to attempt to stop the breakaway. Ukah was able to slide a pass to mory across the goal box, but his shot was over the bar as a defender retreated and rushed the shot. One minute later, the Timbers seemed ready to widen the lead when a cross from Emory found Hasson open at the far post, but his header on an open net slipped over the crossbar when it appeared easier to score than miss on the shot.

But five minuteS later, the Timbers did widen the lead when a nice series of passes off a corner from Daniel Leach to Kip Erskine, found Ukah in the six yard box, and he was able to one-time the ball into the Yakima net to give the Timbers a 3-0 lead. In the next minute the Timbers had another great chance when Hasson made a nice run down the right side, but his tight angle shot was saved by Sanchez.

Yakima pulled back a goal in the 32nd minute when Junior Garcia made a nice run to the top of the Timbers box, and slid a low shot into the corner past a diving Austin Guerrero to pull back to a 2-1 score. But the Timbers only waited two minutes to widen the lead back to two goals when Miguel Guante found Richards inside the Yakima box, and he was able to push the ball wide past Sanchez and scored to put the Timbers up 4-1.

In the 36th minute, Yakima would have a great chance to pull back within a goal when Juan Viveros hit a nice free kick from 20 yards out that nipped off the Timbers wall and just over the crossbar. Four minutes later, Cesar Avila also had a good look from the top of the Timbers box, but his open shot was well over the crossbar.

In the 41st minute, the Timbers did everything but put the ball in the net off a a breakaway when Richards made a deep run and forced a reaction save at the near post. Off the corner kick, the ball ended up floating off a rebound to Ukah, who tried a spectacular bicycle kick from the edge of the six yard box that rebounded off the left post, and the half would end with the Timbers holding a 4-1 lead.

The Timbers thought they had their fifth goal just a minute into the second half when Ukah spectacularly back-heeled a cross into the net, but the play was judged offside and waved off. The next good scoring chance would be Yakima’s in the 55th minute when Tyler Penn headed wide left from 12 yards out off a Roberto Silva cross. Shortly afterwards the Timbers were threatening again when a deep lofted pass was run onto by Richards, but his shot slipped just past the right post. Off the ensuing corner kick, Richards had another good look at goal, with shot from near the top of the box forcing a diving save by Sanchez.

But two minutes later, in the 58th minute, the Timbers would get that fifth goal when Richards headed in a cross from Guante to give the Timbers a 5-1 lead. Just four minutes later, the Timbers would add a sixth when Hasson played a through ball to Richards, who stretched to poke the ball before a charging Sanchez could get to the ball, but the poked shot was over Sanchez’s shoulder and into the net, and the score was 6-1.

Yakima once again pulled a goal back, this time in the 70th minute, when a cross from Vinicius Oliveira found Penn open at the far post, and he headed home easily to make the score 6-2.

But the Timbers were not done yet, and five minutes later, when Frankie Lopez made a run down the left side, and his cross to the far post found Ryan Youngbood open at the far post, and one-timed the shot just inside the post to expand the lead to 7-2. The Timbers finished off their scoring onslaught three minutes later when a cross from Roberto Farfan found Sterling Flunder at the far post, and he would also head home from close-in for an 8-2 lead.

Yakima had a late chance to pull back a goal on a breakaway by Oliveira that forced Guerrero out of the box to block the threat, and another open look in the 84th minute when Penn headed over from close-in, but they would not pull back any more goals and the Timbers would end up with the 8-2 rout of the Reds.

Austin Guerrero registered one save in the win, while Mauricio Sanchez recorded six saves for the visitors.
