JULY 18, 2009 |
Timbers U23s win season finale, and secure home playoff match with 5-0 win over Abbotsford Needing a win to secure a home playoff game the following week, the Portland Timbers U23 attacked the visiting Abbotsford Mariners early and often, and were already up 3-0 by the 27th minute, on the way to a 5-0 victory before an announced crowd of 283 at Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon. Ryan Youngblood, Jordan Crasilneck, Frankie Lopez, Josh Brown, and Steven Evans all scored for the Timbers, while Patrick McLain recorded the shutout in goal in his first start for the U23’s. For much of the first half, the ball would remain in the Abbotsford end of the field, and six minutes in, Jordan Crasilneck nearly put the Timbers U23’s in the lead when his shot from inside the box was just over the crossbar. Then four minutes later, the Timbers did take that early lead when Jarad vanSchaik found Ryan Youngblood in the box, and Youngblood scored into the top left corner, his sixth goal in the past three games, and the Timbers had an early 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Youngblood had another chance when he was able to turn on the ball near the touchline, and his tight angle shot slipped only a foot over the crossbar. Then in the 21st minute, the Timbers would double their lead when he surprised Abbotsford goalkeeper Kristjan Johannson with a shot from 30 yards out, which Johannson may have lost in the low sun, that slipped just under the crossbar, and the Timbers had a 2-0 lead. After continuing to control all of the run of play, the Timbers widened that lead to 3-0 six minutes later when Frankie Lopez got a good look from just inside the edge of the box, and blasted a shot into the lower right corner for the three goal Portland lead. In the 35th minute, the Timbers U23’s would put yet another goal on the board when the Abbotsford keeper was unable to control a Timbers corner kick, and Timbers defender Josh Brown poked in the rebound with his toe for the 4-0 lead, which would be the halftime score. The second half saw little change as the Timbers continued to attack the Abbotsford goal, with Tracy Hasson and Collen Warner failing to score on good chances in the first 10 minutes of the half. In the 59th minute, the Timbers seemed assured of going up by five goals when a Miguel Guante cross found Hasson wide open 10 yards out from goal, but the Timbers midfielder muffed the shot and the ball trickled wide right of goal. The Mariners would have perhaps their best scoring change of the match, and the only one that produced a save for Portland goalkeeper Patrick McLain, when a free kick in the 61st minute by Simon Crocker from 25 yards out was well taken, but right at McLain who saved comfortably. In the 85th minute, the home side nearly got a fifth goal when a pass found Steven Evans making a diagonal run into the box, but his shot was slightly scuffed and saved by Johannson. But then just a few minutes later, it would be Evens who would get that fifth Timbers goal when a long high cross by Gemechu Abraham eluded the Abbotsford keeper, and Evans lightly chipped the ball back into the net for the 5-0 lead, which would be the final score, and secures the Timbers U23’s second place in the PDL Northwest Division, and the right to host a playoff game in the first round. Kristjan Johannson recorded seven saves for the Mariners, having faced 33 shots on the night, while Portland’s Patrick McLain recorded only one save on the free kick, having faced a total of 3 shots.
