The Portland Timbers U-23s continued their dominating start to the 2010 season as they would easily handle the Yakima Reds by a 6-0 score on a beautiful Saturday evening at the Kiggins Bowl in Vancouver, Washington. Defender Ryan Kawulok would record the second-ever hat trick for the U-23’s on this night, while Freddie Braun, Tracy Hasson, and Brian Ramsey would also score for the Timbers. Jake Gleeson and Steve Spangler would combine for the shutout in goal, the sixth straight for the Timbers.

The Timbers would get their first good chance in the 8th minute, with Paul Ogunyemi making a nice run down the left side, and crossing to forward Brent Richards, who made a nice turn 15 yards out, but his shot was just over the bar. Five minutes later, it was Brian Ramsey making the run, this time down the ride side, but his attempted low pass across the goal mouth to Richards was smothered by Yakima goalkeeper Andrew Wildfong.

In the 16th minute the Timbers would produce another good scoring chance, this time off a corner kick which eventually ended up at the feet of Jordan Crasilneck, but his shot from 20 yards out was right at the Yakima keeper and easily saved. Shortly afterwards, a long pass to the run of Richards required Wildfong to come way out of his box to clear the ball, but he was able to get to the ball just before Richards and stopped the threat.

The Timbers were now pressing and getting several corner kicks as a result, with Graham Dugoni just missing off a failed corner kick clearance, but his chip from 12 yards out was just over the bar. In the 20th minute, it was Richards missing high on a blast from the top of the box, followed by Dugoni missing high just a few minutes later.

The Reds would get their first good scoring chance in the 24th minute when Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson failed to cover a ball at the edge of the box after making a reaction save on a breakaway, allowing a brief look at open goal for Jorge Brambila, but his shot from 25 yards was well over the bar.

Shortly afterwards, the Timbers would finally break the scoreless deadlock when off a Crasilneck corner kick, defender Ryan Kawulok headed a diagonal shot from 15 yards out that was nearly kept out by a Yakima defender, but he was only able to deflect the ball into the top of the net that was going in anyway, and the Timbers had an early 1-0 lead.

Five minute later, Timbers defender Brock Granger would have a good look when he made a run down the left side, then cut back to get a good look from just inside the box, but his low shot was blocked by Wildfong. But then in the 31st minute, the Timbers would double their lead when Ogunyemi would head a pass to Freddie Braun near the Reds post, and Bruan blasted a low shot past a charging Wildfong to give the Timbers a 2-0 lead.

Only two minutes later, the Timbers opened up a 3 goal lead when midfielder Tracy Hasson made a run to the corner of the box, then cut back to get an open look, and blasted a low shot to the far corner of the goal past Wildfong to give the Timbers a 3-0 lead.

And just two minutes after that, the Timbers made it a 4 goal lead when Dugoni headed a pass over the outstretched fingers of Wildfong to Kawulok, who was wide open only a yard out, and easily tapped into the net to make the lead 4-0, ending a three goal run in only four minutes.

The Timbers appeared ready to make it 5-0 when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 39th minute, but the PK attempt by Ramsey was saved nicely by Wildfong. Hasson would have one nice good look before the half when he had an open look from the top of the box but was blasted well over, and the score at the break would be 4-0 Timbers.

Three minutes into the second half, the Reds nearly pulled one back when Esteban Potenciano attempted to chip second half substitute keeper Steve Spangler from the corner of the box, but his shot was over the crossbar and never really threatened. Then in the 50th minute, the Timber did get their fifth goal when a through ball from Richards had Ramsey in alone, and he blasted low past a charging Wildfong and into the lower right corner to give the Timbers a 5-0 lead. One minute later, Granger had another good look with a cutback move, similar to the first half, but his shot was right at Wildfong and easily saved.

Yakima would get a decent chance in the 62nd minute when Brambila had a chip attempt after a blocked free kick had pulled Spangler out of position, and his attempted chip shot found Yakima forward Weslen Silva, but hit shot was right at Spangler and saved.. Two minutes later, after a scramble in front of the Yakima net, Ricky Abrego had a nice shot from 10 yards out stopped by a kick save by Wildfong. Then three minutes later, Abrego would have another good scoring chance as he attempted to poke the ball into the net off a rebound of a blocked Ogunyemi shot, but defensive forced his attempt wide left.

The Timbers had now subbed in many players and weren’t getting as many chances, and Yakima nearly pulled a goal back in the 75th minute when a free kick from 20 yards out by Warlen Silva hit the crossbar near the upper right corner, but that was close as the Reds would come in ending the shutout.

The Reds would go down a man when Warlen Silva, while on the ground after being fouled, kicked up at his fouler and was given a straight red.

Just before stoppage time, the Timbers would finish their scoring when Kawulok completed his hat trick when he once again headed in a Crasilneck corner kick, this time over the hands of substitute goalkeeper Claudio Lazar, and off the crossbar and into the net for the 6-0 final.
