Whitecaps OT goal sinks Timbers The Timbers let their seven-game home winning streak slip away when Vancouver's Winston Griffiths knocked a Jeff Clarke cross into the Timbers net five minutes into the first overtime for a 1-0 Vancouver win in front of 5,093 fans at Portland's PGE Park. Both teams were playing on short rest, with the Timbers having played Thursday night, and the Whitecaps having played at home against Montreal the previous evening. It took until the 13th minute before either team threatened, when Vancouver's Justin Thompson's shot from the edge of the Timbers box forced Portland goalkeeper Josh Saunders to make a diving save to his right to keep the ball out of the net. One minute later, the Timbers hd their first good chance when a chip into the box from Alex Bengard just eluded the lunge of Portland striker Alan Gordon, who had an empty net to put the ball into but could not make contact. In the 18th minute, the Timbers had another good opportunity when Byron Alvarez had a chance to shoot on goal from near the penalty spot, but his shot was blocked off his foot by Thompson. In the 24th minute, the Timbers had their best chance of the first half when a cross into the box from Jake Sagare found Gordon wide open only six yards out, and though the Timbers striker would have probably been better off one-timing the shot, he trapped and then shot instead, putting the shot right at Vancouver keeper Alex Marques. In the 32nd minute, Gordon once again had a good chance on a header off an Alvarez cross, but Gordon's shot bounced in front of the Vancouver keeper and was saved, and after a scramble in the box, a Scott Benedetti shot deflected wide right. One minute later, Alvarez showed some nice ball control with some juggling at the top of the Whitecaps box, but his attempt to turn and shoot was deflected wide right. Another wild scramble in front of the Whitecaps net off the ensuing corner kick rebounded back and forth in front of the Whitecaps goal, but eventually the ball rebounded back out and was cleared. The Whitecaps would have the last good chance of the half when Oliver Heald headed just wide right off a corner kick, and the half would end scoreless. Six minutes into the second half, the Whitecaps had a golden opportunity when David Xausa broke in behind the Timbers defense, kept onside by one Timbers defender, and had a one-on-one with the Timbers keeper, but his attempt to chip Saunders went just wide to the right. Two minutes later, Alfredo Valente slipped in behind the Timbers defense and had another one-on-one with Saunders, but his shot from the top of the box also went wide right. In the 57th minute, Portland's Brian Winters found himself with a good chance inside the Whitecaps box after a give-and-go with Bengard, but his low shot towards the far post was kept out by a kick save from Marques. Two minutes later, Alvarez had a good run on a play-on after he had been fouled by Nick Dasovic, but hit the shot wide right. The referee awarded the foul anyway, but the free kick by Hugo Alcarez-Cuellar was right at the Whitecaps keeper. In the 66th minute, a momentary lapse by the Timbers defense nearly cost them a goal when a bad clearance was knocked back into the box where Xausa redirected the shot towards net, forcing a point-blank save by Saunders. Four minutes later, a cross from Sagare found Gordon open 10 yards out from the Whitecaps goal, but his header was just wide left. In the 85th minute, Alvarez's had a shot from six yards out blocked wide to the right. In the 87th minute, the Whitecaps nearly won the game in regulation when Valente had an open shot from 15 yards out, but his shot rebounded off the left post before finally being cleared by the Timbers defense. In the 88th minute, the first over several good late chances for the Timbers was when Alvarez's bicycle kick was deflected just a yard or so over the bar. On the ensuing corner kick by Alcaraz-Cuellar, a header from Bengard also just barely went over the crossbar. One minute later, a diagonal chip into the box from Andrew Gregor found the foot of Timbers forward Dan Antoniuk only about four yards out, but Marques made a fine point-blank save on the shot to keep a clean slate, and force the match into overtime. Five minutes into the first overtime, the Whitecaps got the game-winning goal when Jeff Clarke stole the ball near the Timbers box, and his low cross rebounded off a few players in the Timbers six-yard box, and finally off Whitecaps forward Winston Griffiths and into the Timbers net, for a 1-0 Whitecaps victory, dropping the Timbers back into a first-place tie in the Western Conference with Minnesota (but with a game in hand), and moving the Whitecaps up to 16 points and 3rd place in the West. Josh Saunders had five saves in the losing effort, while Alex Marques had six saves for the victorious Whitecaps.
