Timbers escape with 0-0 draw with Vancouver The Portland Timbers carried a lot of momentum into their Saturday night match against the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps, with 3 wins and 1 draw in their past four matches. The Timbers responded with a rather flat performance in a match that saw few scoring chances, but managed to escape with a 0-0 draw in front of a season-high 6,298 at PGE Park. Mamba Chisoni had the first good threat for the Timbers, when he charged into the box in the 3rd minute, but was unable to get a shot off as the ball was knocked off his feet 12 yards out from goal. In the 11th minute, it appeared the Whitecaps had taken the lead when Joe Gjertsen cut back near the top of the box, and hit a powerful shot that slipped through Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders hands, and the PGE Park crowd fell silent as Saunders retreated and appeared to swat the ball back out after it had crossed the line. The players and the crowd waited for the goal indication that never came, and the players and referees retreated back upfield as the ball was cleared by the Portland defense, with the score still tied at 0-0. The Timbers had the next good scoring chance when in the 25th minute, a rebound off a cross went right to forward Byron Alvarez, open just inside the top of the box, but his shot was deflected wide by a charging Whitecaps defender. The Whitecaps would have a few good chances in the final five minutes of the half, first when Gjertsen's powerful blast was tipped over the bar by Saunders. Off the ensuing corner kick, an unexpected deflection in the box had Saunders flat-footed and he had to kick the ball clear. The Timbers threatened late in the half with a free kick from Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar that was curling to the far post was snared by Vancouver goalkeeper Tony Caig, and the half would end at 0-0. Early in the second half, the Whitecaps would have the first good chance when Gjertsen slipped in behind the Timbers defense, but Saunders charged out to the top of the box and forced Gjertsen to push the ball wide, too wide for him to put a shot on goal when he recovered the ball near the endline, but the Whitecaps were not able the turn the deep possession into a shot. In the next twenty minutes the Timbers would have much of the run of play, and had a few deep crosses and corner kicks that they were not able to put on net. In the 63rd minute, Vancouver's Stefan Leslie had an open look from 20 yards out that he wasted when his uncontested shot was a good five yards wide to the right. In the 74th minute, Portland's Luke Kreamalmeyer had an open look of his own, also from about 20 yards out, but his shot was right at Cain and was easily saved. Four minutes later Kreamalmeyer would have another good opportunity when he made a run down the left side on an overlap, but could not put his shot on net as it was well side left from 15 yards out. In the 80th minute, many in the crowd thought the Timbers had taken the lead when an Alcaraz-Cuellar free kick from 25 yards out curled to the bottom left corner and missed the post by a yard, sliding along the side netting and of the back net mount, before the fans realized the ball was outside the net and not in the goal. Three minutes later, another Alcaraz-Cuellar free kick found Jacobi Goodfellow unmarked eight yards out, but his header slipped a yard past the far post. In the 85th minute, the Whitecaps had their best chance to take the lead when a cross from the right side by David Morris found Steve Kindel open from the post, and his header from eight yards out was saved by a reaction save from Saunders that pushed the ball just past the post. Four minutes later, the Kindel would have another good chance from near the corner of the box, but his shot was deflected off a Timbers defender and Saunders was able to scramble and cover the ball. In stoppage time, another Alcaraz-Cuellar free kick once again found the head of a Timbers player deep inside the Whitecaps box, this time it was Lee Morrison whose header from eight yards out was over the bar. It would be the final scoring chance for either team and the match would end in a 0-0 draw. Vancouver goalkeeper Tony Caig would be credited with one official save, while Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders had five.
