Antoniuk penalty holds up in Timbers 1-0 win at Toronto

After their disappointing performance in Rochester, the Portland Timbers played their second game in two nights in Toronto against the Lynx, the Lynx themselves having tied Montreal by a 0-0 score on the road the night before. But on this night, it would be an early penalty kick awarded to the Timbers that would be the difference, a spot kick converted by Dan Antoniuk to give the Timbers a 1-0 victory in front of 2,724 at Toronto's Centennial Park.

The Timbers started their new signee, and Charleston Battery legend Paul Conway at forward, as Conway would see his first action of the season. Conway very nearly made a quick statement in the 5th minute when his shot from 25 yards out hit off the crossbar and went over.

Ten minutes later, the Timbers were once again attacking when midfielder Scott Benedetti, cutting into the box to receive a pass, was fouled on a sliding tackle by Abraham Francois, and the referee pointed to the spot. For the third time in three games the Timbers had a spot kick, and for the third time they would convert, this one being slipped inside the left post, and just under the dive of Lynx goalkeeper Richard Goddard, by forward Dan Antoniuk, and the Timbers had an early 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later the Lynx would see their first good chance, with Dave Simpson's shot from 25 yards out going just wide to the left. The Lynx had another good chance in the 35th minute, with Jamie Dodd's blast from 25 yards out going right to Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

But the best scoring chance for the Lynx would be in the 39th minute, when Saunders' attempt to clear the ball on a pass back deflected off Simpson, and several seconds, Saunders stayed at the edge of the box attempting to keep Simpson from shooting or crossing as the Timbers defense retreated. After a few seconds, Simpson was able to cross to the opposite side of the six yard box where Sean Fraser's header was not on goal, with Saunders still not in position, but the Lynx were not able to take advantage of the mistake. The half would end with the Timbers clinging to the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes into the second half, Fraser would have a golden opportunity to pull the game level when he made a run unmarked to just inside the Timbers box, but his blast was badly aimed, 10 or so yards wide of the goal. Four minutes later it was the Timbers who were unable to convert, when a Conway free kick was stopped on a fine save by Goddard, but fell to the foot to Antoniuk, whose attempt to stab at the quick rebound from eight yards out went over the bar.

Each team's #14 would spoil a chance with a shot right at the opposing goalkeeper in the next ten minutes or so (Sita-Taty Matondo for Toronto, Benedetti for Portland), then in the 81st minute, with a free kick only inches outside the Lynx box after the Lynx keeper was ruled to have carried the ball outside his area with his hands, Edwin Miranda's blast was parried by Goddard as it appeared headed directly for his face, stopped with a protective move as much as anything. Four minutes later the Timbers threatened again, when after a free kick went through to the far side to be picked up by defender Gavin Wilkinson, his flick to Scot Thompson, unguarded at the six-yard box, was flicked on but wide to the left of the goal.

In the 88th minute, Timbers substitute Byron Alvarez nearly put the game out of reach as he had a chance to turn at the top of the box, but a spectacular diving save by Goddard deflected the ball wide, and keep the Lynx with a chance to draw level in the closing minutes.

And that's very nearly what they did, when in stoppage time, Huffman Eja-Tabe made a run down the left side and into the box, and was able to cut back dangerously close to the Timbers goal, but his attempt at a low cross to in front of the box was blocked back out by a sliding Saunders, whose kick-save came just before the final whistle, preserving the win for the Timbers, their first ever in Toronto, by the 1-0 score.

Josh Saunders had four saves in the winning effort, as did Richard Goddard in the losing effort.
