The Portland Timbers opened their 2005 season on a rainy day in Portland, but the rain dried up just in time for the match, and after a goal drought in the first half, the Timbers found their form and knocked home three goals in the second half for a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Lynx in front of 5,275 fans (most up under the roof) at PGE Park. Brian Winters was initially credited with his first Timbers goal, later changed to an own goal, while Edwin Miranda and Byron Alvarez also scored for the Timbers. Josh Saunders recorded the shut out in net for Portland.

Though the Timbers came into this match riding a 10-game regular season unbeaten streak, for the first fifteen or twenty minutes, it was the visiting Lynx who were dominating play. The Lynx attempted to use the speed of their forwards to slip in behind the Timbers 3-man defense, and in the 3rd minute, after forward Ali Gerba had pushed the ball into the corner, a cross into the box was headed to Lynx defender Jeremie Piette, who was open at the far post, but Piette was not able to get a foot on the ball.

The Lynx had the next good scoring chance when after Lynx striker Robin Hart pushed Timbers defender Scot Thompson off the ball, Hart was in alone on Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders, but Saunders charged out and managed to get just enough of the ball (and of Hart) to take most of the pace off the shot, and the ball was cleared before it made it to the net by Timbers defender Lee Morrison.

The Timbers finally had a few good chances of their own shortly afterwards, with a few dangerous crosses into the box just missing the head of Scott Benedetti on a cross from Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar, and knocked just wide by Thompson on a cross from Aaron Heinzen.

In the 23rd minute, the Lynx had another good chance when Jamie Dodds had an open look from the top of the box, but his shot was just wide left. Three minutes later it was the Timbers who had their chance, when a pass from Byron Alvarez to Benedetti was pushed just left by the Timbers forward.

The final good chance of the half was in the 40th minute when Lynx forward Sean Fraser's blast from 25 yards out was deflected wide left, and the half ended scoreless.

Right from the start of the second half, it was the Timbers who were dominating play, almost endline to endline, and it didn't take long for them to put the ball into the net, or more accurately, for the Lynx to put it in for them.

In the 50th minute, after Timbers midfielder Edwin Miranda stole the ball from Piette, midfielder Brian Winters, who had yet to score in his four seasons with the Timbers, attempted to play a pass through to Alvarez, but instead his pass was deflected by Lynx midfielder Neils Dekker, and the deflection was perfectly placed just inside the right post to give Winters his first Timbers goal, and give the Timbers a 1-0 lead.

Over the next ten minutes the Lynx tried to respond, and had a few deep runs, but the crosses were easily collected by Saunders. Then in the 59th minute, the Timbers doubled their lead when an Alcaraz-Cuellar cross fell to the foot of midfielder Edwin Miranda, whose volley was deflected by Lynx goalkeeper Theo Zagar, but it wasn't enough to keep the ball out of the net and the Timbers had a 2-0 lead.

A few minutes later, the Timbers nearly had their third when Alvarez had a breakaway coming in on an angle from the Toronto keeper's left, but Alvarez's shot was just wide to the right and into the side netting.

The Lynx had a chance to pull back a goal in the 69th minute when they had a free kick chance from just outside the Timbers box, but Gerba's shot was just wide to the left. Six minutes later, the Lynx had an even better opportunity when Gerba broke into the box behind the Timbers defense, but he was unable to control the ball and had to push wide, and a retreating Morrison blocked his initial shot, and his follow up across the goal mouth went wide to the left.

In the 75th minute, a beautiful sequence of high passes from David Henning, to Alcaraz-Cuellar, to Alvarez found the Timbers striker with a chance for a header at an almost open net, but his shot from 5 yards out was just over the bar.

In the 81st minute, trying to press more players forward to pull within a goal, the Lynx had another good chance when Dave Simpson had an open look from near the top of the box, but his shot was well wide to the right.

Then in the 84th minute, the Timbers did get that third goal, when a chip pass from Memo Arzate found the head of Alvarez, whose header from 12 yards out kissed first the right post, then the left, before finally settling just over the line to give the Timbers a 3-0 lead.

The Lynx did have one last chance to avoid the shutout when in second half stoppage time, a corner kick from Huffman El Tabe was headed on net by a Lynx player, but cleared off the line by Tommy Poltl, then finally collected by Saunders as he layed on the turf, and a few seconds later the whistle blew three times as the Timbers pushed their unbeaten streak in the regular season to eleven games with the 3-0 victory over the Lynx.

Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders had one official save in the win, as was Lynx keeper Theo Zagar, who was also credited with one save in the losing effort.
