Early goal takes wind out of Timbers, lose 2-0 in Puerto Rico The Portland Timbers travelled to Puerto Rico for the first time to face the Islanders, but an early goal by Puerto Rico's Mauricio Salles would set the tone, and the Timbers would never recover as the Islanders would add a second-half goal for the 2-0 final in front of 5,580 at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. As in the Rochester games three nights before, the Timbers were on their heels right from the start as the Islanders went on the attack immediately. The Timbers defense had to turn away two shots inside the first minute, with shots by Corey Woolfolk and Johanes Mazila being blocked by the defense from inside the 18-yard box before they could get to the Timbers goal. But goalkeeper Josh Saunders would have work soon enough, having to jump back to tip a shot off the crossbar on the subsequent corner kick, but eventually the Timbers would clear that chance as well. In the 6th minute, the Islanders would get on the board first when a cross into the box found Salles open from 6 yards out, and he beat Saunders high to the left side to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later the Islanders had a great chance to widen the lead when a ball bounced over the Timbers back line near midfield and Saunders was forced to charge out of the box a good 15 to 20 yards to clear the ball upfield just before an Islanders forward could get to it. For most of the rest of the half, both teams would have a series of shots that were either high or wide, or right at the opposing keeper, with the Islanders getting the majority of the shots. Alexis Rivera, Woolfolk, Edivaldo DaSilva, Peter Vilegas, and Marco Velez all had chances at the Timbers goal, while Tom Poltl, Edwin Miranda, Lee Morrison, Dan Antoniuk, and Scott Benedetti had chances for the Timbers, but none of these shots would force difficult saves, and the half would end with the Islanders up 1-0. The Timbers would make three substitutions at the half, bringing in Aaran Lines, Shawn Saunders, and Byron Alvarez, three players who have been regular starters, but they were still having trouble buidling any attack against the Islanders defense. Six minutes into the second half, the Islanders all but had a second goal on the board but for two spectacular saves by the Timbers keeper. The first shot from about 10 yards out by Woolfolk forced a reaction save by Saunders, but the ball rebounded back out towards the spot, and Saunders charged and threw himself at the follow-up shot, in what may be his best save of the year so far, and the ball was cleared. In the 58th minute, the Timbers had the chance to tie that they had been looking for when Islanders goalkeeper Dan Kennedy was unable to control a high cross and it fell to the foot of Alvarez, who had a completely open net to shoot out, though at a bit of an angle and about 15 yards out, but missed the goal completely, going wide left, and the Islanders would dodge the bullet and maintain their one goal lead. But in the 74th minute, the Islanders would get that two goal lead when Salles got to about 25 yards out, with the Timbers defense falling back, but unmarked for a few seconds, Salles let a blast go that was a rocket to the upper left hand corner of the net, a shot Saunders had no chance at, and the Islanders would have a 2-0 lead. The Timbers would not seriously threaten for the rest of the match, and the Islanders held on for the 2-0 victory. Dan Kennedy (who had originally been drafted by the Timbers) had three saves for the victorious Islanders, while Josh Saunders had six saves in the losing effort.
