Timbers lay another six on the Aviators The Portland Timbers came into their game on Thursday night against the Edmonton Aviators against a team that had been playing much better since the Timbers had beaten them 6-0 on June 10. But a tired Aviators team was no match for the Timbers as the home team once again put six on the board in a 6-1 win as Alan Gordon had the hat trick, with Byron Alvarez scoring twice and Dan Antoniuk adding a goal for the Timbers. Sean Fraser had the lone goal for the visiting Aviators in front of 4,230 at PGE Park. The Timbers took control almost from the opening whistle, and in the first minute Jake Sagare nearly found the net, forcing a good save from Nick Stankov. Just a few minutes later, A-League leading scorer Alan Gordon had a good turn on the ball near the Aviators penalty spot, but his shot went just wide to the right. Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar had another good opportunity a few minutes later, but his low shot was saved by a diving Stankov. But the Timbers finally broke though on an attack that started with a hard shot from 28 yards out from Alex Bengard that was saved by Stankov as he put his hands up to protect his face, but the ball rebounded up and dropped right to the head of Gordon, who was unmarked near the penalty spot, and though Stankov got a hand on Gordon's header, it was only enough to push it off the upright and deflect into the net for a 1-0 lead for the Timbers. In the 15th minute, the Timbers looked ready to widen the lead when a cross from the left side from Portland's Aaron Heinzen trickled just out of the reach of Sagare, and a collision in the box between a charging Alcaraz-Cuellar and Edmonton's Paul Dhaliwal ended the scoring threat. But in the 17th minute, the Aviators struck back when a steal near midfield was chipped by Ibrahim Mollaibrahimagaoglu (also known as Ebo) into the run of Aviators forward Sean Fraser, who hit a low shot that slipped in between Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders and the near post, and the Aviators had pulled one back to level the score at 1-1. Though the Timbers were controlling long stretches of possession, and had put some shots on net over the next fifteen minutes or so, they did not get another really good scoring opportunity until the 33rd minute when an Alcaraz-Cuellar cross was headed just wide to the left by Gordon. Six minutes later, Portland's Sagare had a good look when he turned on the ball near the top of the box, but his shot was a yard over the bar. The half would end with the score tied at 1-1. Four minutes into the second half, the Timbers would take the lead back when Sagare stole the ball in the Edmonton half, then fed a cross that appeared to be dummied by Andrew Gregor, and a trailing Gordon was unmarked 18 yards out from goal, and he hit the shot easily inside the left post for this 13th goal of the season, putting the Timbers up 2-1. The Timbers were still controlling the ball most of the time, but the Aviators had a good chance to even the score in the 54th minute when substitute Daniel Drummond, who had just entered, had a pass find him open in the box, six yards out, to the Timbers goalkeeper's right, but Drummond's attempt to turn and shoot inside the near post was a yard or two wide of the net, a shot probably hurried a bit though he had a lot more time to shoot than he was aware of. In the 60th minute, the Timbers made their nearly-constant pressure pay off again when Gregor weaved in and out of traffic into the box, then crossed to an open Gordon, who appeared to be shooting for the far post, but a sliding Fraser deflected the ball past the near post instead, but the ball found it's way into the net for the Gordon hat-trick, and a 3-1 lead for the Timbers. With Gregor becoming comfortable in his new role in Timbers green, he appeared to have his best game for his new side, as the Timbers were seemingly moving the ball from defender through midfield and to the attackers with ease. The Timbers also had found more success moving the ball back towards the middle as they moved into the attacking third, rather than going wide to Sagare and Alcaraz-Cuellar, which has been their normal attacking style. In the 69th minute, a hard tackle from Edmonton's Chris Lemire (which brought out a yellow on the Aviators' forward) caused Heinzen to leave the game, to be replaced by Byron Alvarez who entered the game in the 72nd minute. Alvarez instantly made his makr on the match when he managed to find the net only 15 seconds after entering, when after receiving a pass from midfield from Sagare, Alvarez made a 40 yard run down the left side, cut back between two Edmonton defenders, then beat Stankov to the lower right corner for his 7th goal on the season, his 4th against Edmonton, and put the Timbers up 4-1. Five minutes later, another Timbers substitute immediately made his mark on the game. Dan Antoniuk, who had replaced Gordon in the 73rd minute, was in the right place after a pass from Sagare had Alvarez on a breakaway, and after the Timbers striker had nutmegged Chris Devlin, his shot was saved by Stankov, but nobody had picked up Antoniuk, who had made a run down the right side, and Antoniuk buried the rebound into the open net to put the Timbers up 5-1. The fresh Timbers substitutes up front were playing havoc with the tired Edmonton defenders, and in the 81st minute, Antoniuk had a point-blank save only kept out by a kick save by Stankov. Two minutes later, Edmonton would have their third and final shot on the night when Fraser hit a hard shot from right outside the box that was right at Saunders for the easy save. In the 88th minute, 2nd half Timbers substitute Edwin Miranda nearly surprised Stankov with a shot from 45 yards out that appeared headed for the upper left corner, but Stankov made a good diving save. But a few seconds later, Alvarez once again had the ball near the top of the box, made a few juke moves before tapping the ball wide to Antoniuk. The Edmonton players stopped, thinking the play was offside, but the flag stayed down, and Antoniuk chipped the ball back to Alvarez, who headed to the far corner for the sixth goal on the night, the final goal of the match as the Timbers offense had finally awoken again for a 6-1 win over the Aviators. Josh Saunders was not credited with an official save on the night for the Timbers, while Nick Stankov had nine saves for the Aviators.
