I got six! Timbers light up Atlanta for five second-half goals in 6-1 rout The Portland Timbers took a huge step towards securing a playoff spot on Thursday night against the Atlanta Silverbacks, exploding for five second-half goals on the way to a 6-1 win over the Silverbacks in front of 5,361 at PGE Park, eliminating the Silverbacks from playoff contention, and putting the Timbers a single win away from the 5th position in the playoffs. "Dizzy Dan" Antoniuk scored a hat trick for the Timbers, while Edwin Miranda added two, and Byron Alvarez also scored for the Timbers. Alex Pineda-Chacon had the lone goal for the 'Backs. For much of the night, the attack would be all Timbers, but the first chance of the match would actually be for the Silverbacks in the 4th minute, with Andres Murriagui's flick on from near the Timbers penalty spot going just wide right. It would be the last time the Silverbacks would threaten the Timbers goal until first half stoppage time. In the 9th minute, Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar took a free kick from just outside the Atlanta box, but though his shot curled around the Atlanta wall, it was right into the chest of Silverbacks keeper Joe Barton. Seven minutes later, Alcaraz-Cuellar had another good chance with a diving header from 10 yards out, also saved easily by Barton. Two minutes later, Portland's Dan Antoniuk had his first good look of the night, but his shot from 10 yards out was just over the bar. In the 30th minute, Antoniuk would miss but in spectacular fashion, as his bicycle kick attempt was just left and high of the Atlanta goal. In the 39th minute, Timbers midfielder Aaran Lines made a good run into the Silverbacks box, but his shot from 10 yards out was once again easily saved by Barton. But in the 43rd minute, the Timbers constant attack on the Silverbacks net would finally pay off, when Antoniuk would chest trap a pass from Scot Thompson, then pound the shot into the roof of the net from eight yards out to give the Timbers a 1-0 lead. The Timbers were not done with their first half attack, as a hard shot from Edwin Miranda forced Barton to tip the shot just wide. And after the ensuing corner kick, Paul Conway's shot from a tight angle would deflect off the outside of the post, and Conway would suffer a separated shoulder on the play, and would be replaced by Byron Alvarez at the half. The Silverbacks would get one last chance in first-half stoppage time, as Machel Millwood's dipping shot from 20 yards out was just over the bar, and the half would end with the Timbers holding a 1-0 lead. It didn't take long for Alvarez to make his presence known, when six minutes into the second half, he fought off the Silverbacks defenders to put a shot on goal that Barton partially saved, but the ball would trickle just over the line before Millwood could clear the ball, and the Timbers had widened their lead to 2-0. The Silverbacks would reply quickly, when six minutes later, in the 57th minute, a run down the right side from Rodrigo Rios was one-timed just inside the right post by Alex Pineda-Chacon, and Atlanta had pulled back to 2-1. In the 63rd minute, the Silverbacks came close to tying the match when a Millwood header from eight yards out forced a diving save by Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders before the Timbers were able to clear. Three minutes later, the Timbers appeared certain to widen their lead when a cross from Lines found Miranda open just outside the six yard box, but his shot was kept out the net by rebounding directly off Barton's face, and the Timbers lead would remain at one goal. But in the 72nd minute, the Timbers would find the net again when after an Alvarez shot was saved by Barton, Antoniuk knocked the rebound into a completely open net to give the Timbers a 3-1 lead. Five minutes later, the Timbers pulled even further ahead when after a shot from Miranda was stopped by Silverbacks defender Anthony McManus, but McManus lost track of the ball and Miranda simply ran around him and chipped the shot over Barton to put the Timbers up 4-1. In the 83rd minute, Atlanta would go down a man when Kristopher Stone fouled Thompson from behind on a breakaway just outside the box and was red carded, though the Timbers were unable to convert on the free kick. But five minutes later, the Timbers got their fifth goal of the night when after intercepting an errant pass, a hard shot from Miranda deflected off a Silverbacks defender and over Barton, and the Timbers had a 5-1 lead. In stoppage time, Antoniuk would complete his hat trick when he pounded a low cross from Alvarez into the upper right corner for the 6-1 final, the first time the Timbers had scored six goals since the Timbers beat Edmonton on July 8, 2004 by the same 6-1 score, and the fourth time the Timbers have scored six goals since returning to play in 2001. Joe Barton had eight saves in the losing effort, while Josh Saunders only had one save for the Timbers.
