Once again I have had used some numbers for players on Surrey that I cannot identify.
The Rain returned home after their road trip to British Columbia, and earned a 1-1 draw with Surrey United in a match played in front of about 50 fans at Tigard High School. Noelle Miller had the lone Rain goal, while Megan Blaker had Surrey's goal.
For much of the first half, the Rain would be in control of play, but in the 2nd minute, it was Surrey who threatened first when a corner kick required a punch out by the Rain goalkeeper. In the 4th minute, the Rain had a good chance when Mariette Boyce's header from 10 yards out was barely tipped over the bar. In the 18th minute, the Rain had another good chance when Mary Cascio played a nice cross from the right side that Laurie Smith headed just wide left.
In the 24th minute, Smith had another good chance from 25 yards, but her shot went just wide left. In the 33rd minute, the Rain's pressure finally payed off when Noelle Miller made a nice run and hit a curving shot from 18 yards out that found it's way into the top right corner of the net, and the Rain were up 1-0.
The Rain pressed hard to widen the score. But Surrey nearly had an equalizer in the 36th minute when a ball was loose in the box, but the Rain were able to clear. In the 38th minute, Tami Perkins found herself open in the box only 15 yards out, and her shot required a diving save by the Surrey keeper to keep it out of the net. Surrey got the last good chance of the half when #18 took a shot from 18 yards out, but it was right at the Rain keeper, and the half ended with Portland up 1-0.
Just two minutes into the second half, Portland's Christy Spear was in alone against the Surrey keeper, but her shot from 15 yards out trickled just wide right. In the 53rd minute, the Rain nearly doubled the lead when Noelle Miller hit another curling shot from 20 yards out, that required another diving save by the Surrey keeper to keep the score close.
In the 56th minute, Perkins had the Rain threatening again with a nice cross into the box from the right side, but the cross barely eluded the charging Rain forwards, and trickled over the endline.
By the 60th minute, the Surrey attack was beginning to wake up, and in the 61st minute, off a corner kick, a loose ball in the box was struck towards net by #18 for Surrey, but it hit off the left post and stayed out. But in the 70th minute, Surrey's pressure finally paid off when #18 got loose on a breakaway and made a long run from midfield, and chipped the Rain keeper from 20 yards out to even the score at 1-1.
In the 81st minute, the Rain had a good chance to re-take the lead when Cascio had an open shot from 15 yards out, but a good reaction save from the Surrey keeper kept the game tied. In the 87th minute, Surrey nearly stole the win when #17 crossed a ball that went right through the goal mouth, but no one was there to finish for the visitors from Canada.
The Rain had one last chance when after a corner kick and a counterattack, Cascio's shot was just over the bar, and the match would end with the teams drawn at 1-1.
