Goals: 40' - Seattle: Tara Bilanski (Michele Zentz) The Portland Rain defense held up well against the Seattle attack, but Tara Bilanski's goal for the Sounders Select Women in the 40th minute held up for a 1-0 win over the Rain in a match played in front of 245 at Tigard High School. |

During the first ten minutes, the Select kept the ball in the Rain end of the field, but the shots were from well outside the box and were easily saved by Rain goalkeeper Ruth Montgomery. The first good scoring chance for the Rain didn't come until the 33rd minute when a free kick from 25 yards out dropped into the box about 10 yards out from goal, but Stacy Merlitti's shot was deflected over the crossbar by a Seattle defender. Just one minute later, Laura Schott had a good chance for a header from 10 yards out, but was not able to get enough on the ball to challenge Seattle goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen, who saved easily In the 35th minute, a Seattle mistake nearly led to a Portland goal when an attempted clearance deflected off a Seattle player and bounced back into the box, but Jorgensen was able to get to the ball just before Merlitti. Four minutes later, Seattle was on the attack again and Rachel Rodrick dropped a nice pass to a charging Tara Bilanski, who hit a hard shot from 30 yards out that went just wide right, but appeared to have been covered by the Portland goalkeeper. But one minute later, a diagonal pass from Michele Zentz found Bilanski in a full run from the left side, and she hit a shot from 15 yards out that didn't have much pace, but dropped well over Montgomery, and into the top right corner to put Seattle up 1-0. | ![]() |

In the 44th minute, Seattle nearly increased their lead after a 50 yard punt from Jorgensen bounced over the Rain defense and into the run of Karen Hardy, whose first shot was saved by Montgomery, but not cleared. Hardy's follow-up hit off Portland's Jessica Miller. The Seattle bench called for a handball, but no foul was called, and the ball was cleared to midfield. Portland opened the second half playing a more wide-open offense, looking for an early equalizer. In the 52nd minute, Mariette Boyce's diagonal pass into the run of Emma Smith forced the Seattle keeper out to the top of the box, where she was able to smother the ball before Smith could get a shot off. In the 63rd minute, the Sounders Select tested Montgomery once again off a corner kick, which Nichole Martinez stuck with a hard shot, but it was easily controlled by Montgomery, who was positioned well for the save. Just one minute later, the Rain nearly equalized when Smith chipped a shot from 20 yards out that had the Seattle keeper backing up to cover, but the shot grazed off the top of the crossbar and went over for a goal kick. |

In the 65th minute, a dangerous cross into the box had Portland's Courtney Carter making a run towards the far post, but Carter was unable to get to the cross and the ball was cleared by the Seattle defense. For the remainder of the match, Seattle had most of the posession, and forced the Portland defense and Montgomery to clear many dangerous plays into the box, including a 79th minute chip from Seattle's Rodrick that Montgomery was forced to punch back out. In the 82nd minute, the Seattle pressing nearly paid off again when Seattle's Hardy caught Montgomery out of position after a deflection inside the Portland box, but Hardy's shot was saved by Portland's Janay Mountain, who trapped the shot about 3 yards off the line, and cleared. Seattle once again had a good chance to score in the 86th minute when a pass from Rodrick to Hardy found the Seattle forward seemingly open from 10 yards out, but her shot went just wide left. In the 89th minute, Seattle's Rodrick once again found Hardy in a scoring position, this time breaking in for an apparent one-on-one with Montgomery, but Portland's Jessica Miller was quick enough to chase down Hardy and broke up the attack with a sliding tackle at the top of the box that cleared the ball over the sideline. | ![]() |

As the game went into stoppage time, the Rain pushed forward well a few times led by second-half substitute Noelle Miller, who used spin moves and speed to press deep along the right wing into the Seattle defense. But the Seattle defense was packed into the box, and despite a few late crosses, and a few throw-ins close to the Seattle endline, the Rain were not able to put a shot on net during those late attacks, and at the final whistle, the visitors had made their one goal stand up for a 1-0 win. Ruth Montgomery had eight saves for the Rain, while Lindsey Jorgensen had three saves for Seattle. |
