The Portland Rain opened their 2003 season on a damp night, but despite keeping the game with Seattle Hibernian close for awhile, in the end the visitors were too much for the home side, as they exploded for three second-half goals in a 4-0 victory at Tigard High School.
It was the Rain who threatened first, when in the 5th minute, forward Cherish Kaaa hit a corner kick off the near post, which rebounded directly back out to Kaaa, who touched the ball a second time without having touching anyone else, and was therefore a dead ball. In the 10th minute, Seattle had their first good chance, and they made it pay off when Trisha Tateyama cut across the top of the box, and then hit a shot to the lower left corner of the net to put Hibernian up 1-0.
Two minutes later, Seattle's Carmen Sarro nearly widened the lead when she hit a volley that was saved over the bar by Portland's Angela Harrison. Laurie Smith nearly brought Portland even when she had a wide-open header, but couldn't get enough on the shot to beat the Seattle keeper.
The next good scoring chance for either team didn't come until the 36th minute, when Elle Coringa hit a hard shot from 20 yards out but was directly at the Portland keeper. In the 42nd minute, Seattle's Nikki Campbell hit a curling shot from 30 yards out that required a diving save to keep it out of the net, and the half ended with Seattle up 1-0.
The cloudy and rainy night was turning very dark, and the lights at Tigard Stadium were not coming on when expected, and as the second half started, the visibility on the pitch was becoming increasingly difficult. Five minutes into the second half, the Portland keeper was unable to hold onto a Seattle corner kick, but fortunately her defense cleared the ball out before Seattle could put a shot on net. Shots by Seattle's Bree Edwards and Campbell forced good saves by the Portland keeper to keep the game close. Portland had a few good chances to even the score in the 60th and 63rd minutes on shots by Tami Perkins and Stacy Merlitti, but the first shot was just wide left, while the second was kept out by a nice kick save by the Seattle keeper.
At this point, it was getting dark enough that the continuance of the game seemed in doubt, but Seattle seemed to take advantage of the dusk to put in two quick goals. The first was on Sarro's shot from the top of the box that eluded the Portland keeper to put Seattle up 2-0. Five minutes later, just as the lights finally came on, Campbell hit a hard shot from 15 yards out that the Portland keeper had no chance at to make the score 3-0.
In the 75th minute, Seattle put the finishing touch on their second-half goal explosion when after a loose ball in front of the net had players in white and blue scrambling for the ball, Sarro got her foot to the ball and knocked it home for the 4-0 final.
Seattle did have one final close call when in the 80th minute, Cecily Tyler's cross from the right side hit off the crossbar, but the damage had already been done, and Seattle had literally come out of the darkness for a 4-0 win.
