| 84' - Fraser Valley: Angela Trauter (Alexis Heinz) |
Once again I have had used some numbers for players on Fraser Valley that I cannot identify. I got some names off the Fraser Valley match report
In a match that was controlled by the Rain for almost the entire 90 minutes, it was the visitors from Fraser Valley that left with the win after Angela Trauter put a well-placed shot just under the bar in the 84th minute for the 1-0 win. The Rain had eight shots on goal, and put three shots off the woodwork, but could not find the back of the net. Trauter's shot was only the fourth shot on goal for the visiting team, in a match played at Rob Strasser Field at Delta Park in Portland.
After both teams got a feel for each other in the first fifteen minutes, it was the rain who had the first good scoring chance in the 15th minute when Noelle Miller received a pass from Megan Cecchini, but shot wide right from 15 yards out. In the 23rd minute, off a Rain corner kick, a quick series of passes from Jessica Miller, to Noelle Miller, then to Laurie Smith had smith open only 5 yards out, but her shot was somehow tipped off the bar and then over to keep the match scoreless.
In the 32nd minute, the Rain found the woodwork again when Mary Cascio dropped a nice ball to Noelle Miller, whose shot from 20 yards out hit off the left post before rebounding back and out being cleared by the Action defense. The Action had their only really good chance of the first half when #21 for the Action played a nice ball through to #13 who had a breakaway, but Portland's goalkeeper Gillian Dodds got to the ball at the same time as #13, and smothered the shot. The half ended scoreless.
In the second half, the frustrated Rain were pushing for an early goal, and nearly had one in the 49th minute when Tami Perkins dropped a pass to Noelle Miller, whose shot from 15 yards went just wide left. In the next minute, the Rain were on the attack again when Smith's shot from 15 yards was saved by Action goalkeeper Emily Hoag. In the 52nd minute, Fraser Valley had a good chance when #20 hit a chip from 30 yards that required a good save from Dodds to keep the ball out of the net.
The Rain were still pushing for a go-ahead goal and in the 56th minute, the post was once again unfriendly to the home side when Cascio's header from 10 yards out hit off the right post, but stayed out of the goal and was cleared by the Action defense. The home side was still controlling the ball nearly all of the time and once again had a good scoring opportunity in the 66th minute when Jessica Miller chipped a pass into the box to Smith, whose shot from 15 was saved by a diving save by the Action keeper.
Having controlled the game almost from the opening whistle, but still having nothing to show for it, the Rain seemed a bit frustrated and this allowed for the Action to finally start getting more control of play. In the 67th minute, #14 for the Action broke through on the left side and hit a hard shot from 20 yards out, but the shot was right at the Rain keeper. The Rain had a good chance in the 71st minute when a pass dropped from Christy Spear to Perkins had her open briefly from 15 yards out, but her shot was right at the visiting keeper for an easy save.
In the 73rd minute, once again a Fraser Valley run had pushed the ball deep, this time when #21 made a run down the left side, but her shot from 20 yards was once again right at Dodds. But at the 80 minute mark, the Rain started attacking again, and in the 83rd minute, Cascio snuck in behind the defense and managed to get her head on a free kick that had been dropped into the box, but her shot from 10 yards out was easily saved.
But the visitors made one of their rare pushes forward in the 84th minute, and they did what the Rain could not do all day, they made the chance pay off. Fraser Valley's Alexis Heinz kept good control as she moved to near the top of the Rain box, and played a nice pass to Angela Trauter, who hit a shot that didn't have alot of pace, but was a very accurate shot from 20 yards out that barely went under the crossbar, but Dodd was unable to tip it over the bar, and the Action had taken a stunning 1-0 lead on only their fourth shot on goal of the match.
The Rain desperately tried to push forward, but got only one good shot, a shot off a corner kick by Janay Mountain in the 86th minute that was just high from 15 yards out. The visitors were happy to clear the ball past midfield every time they got control, and they managed to kill off the remaining time and escape Portland with a 1-0 win.
Gillian Dodds and Emily Hoag had three saves each for their respective teams.
