| 43' - Team BC: #9 |
| 68' - Portland: Keegan Hughes |
Once again I have had used some numbers for players on Team BC that I cannot identify.
After the Portland Rain had given up a late first-half goal, Keegan Hughes scored the tying goal in the 68th minute as the Rain finished in a draw with Team BC in a match played in front of about 50 fans at Rob Strasser Field at Delta Park.
With the scream of engines from the CART GI Joe's 200 at nearby Portland International Raceway often drowning out the sounds of the match, the Rain and Team BC spent the first 10 minutes or so in midfield, and neither team had a shot on goal for the first 20 minutes. In the 14th minute though, Team BC had threatened first when #19 got a through ball while streaking down the right side, but her shot from 15 yards out was high and wide. The Rain had also had a good chance that didn't result in a shot on goal, when Mary Cascio had been unable to catch up with a ball played from midfield before the Team BC keeper was able to clear it.
Team BC were the first to make a serious threat at goal, when in the 21st minute, #13 had two good shots, the first from 20 yards out that was right at Rain keeper Denise Hutchinson, and the second shortly afterwards when #13 again threatened, this time getting a brief breakaway on a nice pass from midfield, that Hutchinson was able to smother at the top of the box.
For most of the remainder of the first half, Team BC was getting the run of play, but in the 40th minute the Rain nearly had a breakaway when Mimi Osei-Agyemang beat an offside trap, but stumbled while attempting to catch up with a long ball from midfield.
But in the 43rd minute, Team BC took advantage of a badly cleared corner kick when #9 trapped the bad clearance 10 yards out, turned, and shot just inside the left post to give Team BC a 1-0 halftime lead.
Team BC continued to control the run of play as the second half began, and in the 46th minute, #9 had an open look from 25 yards out, but her shot was right at Rain keeper Kristin Dulacki. During the next few minutes, play began to run more in favor of the home side, and in the 51st minute, Megan Cecchini hit a hard high shot from 15 yards out that was only kept out by a great tip over the bar by the BC keeper. The Rain were now keeping control of the ball the majority of the time, though the BC defense had packed in a bit, with a midfielder often dropping to close down Portland's attacks.
The Rain didn't get another good chance to score until the 68th minute, but they made Team BC pay for a mistake similar to the one they had used to score their own goal. After a cross from the right side, the BC clearance was mis-kicked, and Portland's Keegan Hughes was there to punch the ball just inside the left post from 15 yards out, and the Rain had drawn level at 1-1.
Team BC nearly took the lead again in the 73rd minute on a counterattack when #15 made a run from near midfield to the top of the box, but Jessica Miller recovered and was able to block the shot from 15 yards out.
The Rain had one last good chance in the 80th minute when Laurie Smith found herself with an open chance from 15 yards out, but mis-hit the shot. Neither team threatened again, and the match ended in a hard-earned 1-1 draw.
The Team BC keeper had two saves, while Hutchinson had two saves, and Dulacki had four saves for the Rain.
