In an intense match that saw momentum swing back and forth, 100 minutes were not enough to determine the champion, and in the end, Sheldon and South Eugene were awarded the title of co-champions after a 1-1 draw in the title game of the OSAA / U.S. Bank / Les Schwab Tires 4A Boys Final. Tyler Hunnam had the lone goal for the Sheldon Irish while Nick Leonard's late goal for the South Eugene Axemen tied the match.
South Eugene would get the first few shots on net, with Ryan White hitting a shot wide right from 25 yards out in the 4th minute, and then Nathan Risley's shot forcing a diving save from Sheldon goalkeeper Garrett Staples in the 6th minute. For the next 20 minutes, it was the Irish who were getting the scoring opportunities, their best being when Tyler Hannum's hard shot from 35 yards out forced a sprawling save from Axemen goalkeeper Coleman Dow in the 15th minute.
In the 25th minute, South Eugene midfielder Thomas Weibe had a good look from 20 yards out, but his shot was deflected just wide left by the Sheldon keeper. Four minutes later, Sheldon had a great chance to break the scoreless tie when a shot from an angle by Loren Hill trickled through the South Eugene keeper's legs, but the keeper had deflected the shot enough to push it wide left.
Emanual Luvert for South Eugene and Hannum for Sheldon each put shots directly at the opposing keepers over the next 10 minutes, but for the fourth time on this evening, a shot would find the net in the waning minutes of the first half. Just as the click ticked over into the last minute, Sheldon's Hannum got the ball about 40 yards out from goal, then proceeded to cut and weave around three different South Eugene defenders, then beat the South Eugene goalkeeper to the right side, and the Irish had grabbed a 1-0 halftime lead.
The flow of play tightened up during the first 20 minutes of the second half, as neither team really threatened until the 60th minute. That was when the Axemen had two good chances by Nick Leonard, first when his shot was knocked wide by a diving save by Staples. Then, after an ensuing corner kick, White's shot from near the top of the box was tipped barely over the bar.
Over the next five minutes, each team had good chances go just over the bar from inside the box. Then, in the 66th minute, the Axemen had a golden opportunity to tie the match when a free kick from 30 yards out was only saved by a diving save by Staples, but the Sheldon keeper was unable to control the ball and a South Eugene attempt to knock the rebound in was only saved by the ball deflecting off Staples, who was still on the ground when he made the save.
In the 70th minute, Sheldon appeared to have the chance they needed to put the game away when South Eugene's Ryan Imamura was ejected for a foul inside the box, and Sheldon was awarded a penalty kick. Hannum stepped up to take the penalty for the Irish, but Dow guessed correctly with a dive to his left, making the save, and taking the momentum back for the Axemen, although they'd have to pull even while playing down a man.
It wouldn't take long for the momentum to pay off for South Eugene, on a very unusual goal. Leonard used a burst of speed on a run down the right side to get a clear shot from 25 yards out. The shot was right at Staples, who dove slightly forward to make the save just a yard or two off his line. But the ball was slick form the intermittent rain that had fallen during the second half, and the ball somehow managed to slip through the Sheldon keeper's hands, though his legs, and trickled over the line, and suddenly a seemingly guaranteed 2-0 Sheldon lead had turned into a 1-1 tie.
By OSAA rules, the teams played 20 minutes of non-sudden death overtime, but both teams seem to have been physically and mentally exhausted by the previous 80 minutes, and through 20 minutes of intense overtime play, neither team really threatened, and since the OSAA does not allow for sudden-death or a shootout, Sheldon and South Eugene are declared co-champions. It is the 2nd title for the Axemen, who won the title in 1998, and the first for Sheldon.
