Saturday, May 27 vs. Cascade Surge at Corvallis High School


Cascade Surge forward Jason Aldus scored twice, and Zac Marfell added a goal as the Surge shut out John & Phil's Willamette Valley Firebirds 3-0 in a match played before about 75 fans at Corvallis High School.

The Surge got on the scoreboard early, scoring on their very first shot of the game. In the 10th minute, Aldus and Firebirds goalkeeper Colin McMillen both attempted to chase down a through ball that was just outside the Firebirds box. Jason Aldus got to the ball first, and chipped it past McMillen and into the goal to put the Surge up 1-0.

Neither team put much pressure on the opposing goalkeeper for the rest of the half, but when the Surge got their next good chance to score, they made it count. In the 40th minute, McMillen once again came out to attempt to cut down the angle on a Aldus breakaway, and this time Aldus chipped easily over McMillen to put the Surge up 2-0 at the half.

In the second half, the home side had slightly more success moving the ball forward, but were still having trouble putting a shot on net. But the Surge once again made the most of their few shots on goal in the 60th minute when Zac Marfell received a cross from the left side and ran onto it and struck a low bouncing shot which eluded McMillen to put the visitors from Salem up 3-0.

In the 80th minute, the Firebirds appeared ready to pull one goal closer when they were awarded a penalty kick after a handball inside the box. But Surge goalkeeper GK Richard Goddard guessed correctly and kept his sheet clean with a diving save to his left. Three minutes later, the Surge were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box, but McMillen saved his third PK in two nights when he sprawled to his left, barely tipping the penalty shot wide and recording his only save of the match.

Two minutes later, the Firebirds nearly scored after a wild scramble in front of the Surge goal, but JP Capodanno's shot ricocheted off the crossbar, and a moment later, Goddard saved a shot from close in to preserve the shutout and make the final 3-0 in favor of the Surge.
