Firebirds forward Jason Crevar scored twice as John & Phil's Willamette Valley Firebirds beat their regional foe, the Cascade Surge of Salem, 2-0 in a match played before 250 fans at McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon. The Surge played this one match in Keizer to coincide with the Keizer Iris Festival.

Crevar scored early in the first half when he headed home a JP Capodanno corner kick to put the Firebirds up 1-0. In the 30th minute, the Firebirds made it 2-0 when Jason Crevar once again found the back of the net, this time on a free kick. The kick was from 25 yards out, and Crevar tucked it just inside the right post to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Both teams challenged in the second half, but neither team was able to score again, and the Firebirds had their first win of the season in this US Open Cup qualifier. However, this match was one of two qualifiers that did not count towards the standings, so the Firebirds' record for the season remains at 0-2 going into their Saturday match at home against Seattle.
