86ers top Firebirds

Two tired teams met in Abbotsford on June 18th with the home team '86's earning a 2-0 win over John & Phil's Firebirds. The Birds were at the end of a long road trip while Abbotsford had played in Salem, Oregon two days earlier.

The match started out evenly enough with the Birds having a few early scoring opportunities. Abbotsford began to look dangerous on a few counterattacks and Firebirds keeper Colin McMillen was called on to make two good saves to keep the score even at 0-0. Abbotsford were able to take control of the match during the last 20 minutes of the half and went in with a deserved 1-0 lead at half The goal came after an Abbotsford cross and ensuing goal mouth scramble, scored by Justin Student.

The second half began with continued pressure by the '86's who went up by the final 2-0 margin early in the half on a quick counterattack by midfielder Brian VanSchagen that beat the exhausted Firebirds backline. The last half hour of the match was played on even terms with the Firebirds' JP Capadanno missing on a couple of good scoring chances and keeper McMillen being called on to make good saves three seperate times.
