Did you know?
The Firebirds were once league champions? It's true! Though they hadn't found their way to the Willamette Valley yet. In 1992, the Firebirds' home was Palo Alto, California. They were 12-2 in the regular season, and 5-1 in the playoffs, taking the USISL (now the USL) championship with a 1-0 win over the Tucson Amigos. The Firebirds will not be competing in the 2001 season
The webmaster for this page has put up a fan site for the new Portland Timbers A-League team which will begin play in 2001. Former Firebirds Greg Howes, Brian Winters, and Joey Leonetti have all moved on to the Timbers. Please follow the link below to follow the Timbers in their first year in the A-League.

Yakima falls to host Mid-Michigan 5-2 in PDL semi-finals
The Northwest Division champion Yakima Reds fell to the host Mid-Michigan Bucks 5-2 in the PDL semi-final held in Saginaw, Michigan. Tthe defending champion Chicago Sockers beat a New York team in the semi-finals for the second year in a row, this year by a 5-0 score over the Westchester (NY) Flames. Unfortunately, The Bucks' website has chosen not to post any game reports or game photos, posting only the scores. Yakima will play Westchester tomorrow at 6pm Central in the consolation game, with the championship between Chicago and Mid-Michigan following at 8pm Central.

Yakima Reds advance to the final four
The Northwest Division champion Yakima Reds have done what the Firebirds did in 1999; taken their division title on the road, and come away with the conference championship. The Reds knocked off the host Spokane Shadow 2-0 on Saturday in the semi-finals, and then edged the Rocky Mountain Division champion Colorado Comets 1-0 to advance the final four. The PDL final four will be held in Saginaw, Michigan this year. The participating teams will be the host Mid-Michigan Bucks, defending champion Chicago Sockers, Westchester (NY) Flames, and the Yakima Reds. Whether any of these teams will offer good web coverage of the final four remains to be seen. To see the coverage of the 1999 Final Four, click here.

'Birds lose late lead... again
For awhile it looked like the Firebirds were going to close their disappointing 2000 season with a win over the likely division champions, the Yakima Reds, but after Sean Babcock put the Firebirds up 2-1 with less than 20 minutes remaining, the Reds offense exploded for four late goals, and the Reds leave Corvallis with a 5-2 win. The Firebirds finish the 2000 season with a 3-15 league record, 4-16 overall. The Firebirds' three wins came over the top three teams in the division: Yakima, Spokane, and Seattle. Howes among leading scorers in the A-League.
A-League rookie Greg Howes, who was the leading scorer for the Firebirds during their run to the 1999 PDL semi-finals, has moved to near the top of the A-League in scoring. Greg leads the Seattle Sounders in scoring with 13 goals and 4 assists in 22 games. His 13 goals put him in a tie for 4th in the A-League, and his 30 points put him in a tie for 5th. Congratulations Greg!!

Greg Howes scores twice in Sounders 3-0 win over San Diego
Greg is still on a roll, and it moving up the list of leading scorers in the A-League as he tallied two goals in the Seattle Sounders 3-0 win over the San Diego Flash. On Friday night, the same two teams played in San Diego, and while Greg did not score, it should be noted that in the 82nd minute of the Sounders 2-1 win, former Firebird JP Capodanno came into the match as a substitute for Howes.

Six goals in six games
Greg Howes continued his hot scoring streak by putting in the game winner in a 2-1 win for the Seattle Sounders over the Vancouver 86ers. Click here for a match report from Seattle Pitch.

For the past two seasons, this site has been an experiment in web coverage. As far as I know, no american soccer team had more game photos published in the last two years than the Firebirds did, and it didn't require a large monetary investment to do so. It only required the effort and willingness to do so. Unfortunately, this effort did not result in fans in the stands at Firebirds matches, which is unfortunate. If you have any comments about the site or the Firebirds, please write to me at the address listed below.
