Timbers rally from 2 down for 3-3 draw

Diego Valeri scored the first Timbers goal of 2013
Diego Valeri scored the first Timbers goal of 2013

The Portland Timbers opened their 2013 season on Sunday afternoon against the New York Red Bulls, and were quickly down 3-1 after some sloppy play by Caleb Porter’s revamped 2013 lineup.

But the Timbers would rally for the draw after dominating play for much of the rest of the match, with Darlington Nagbe pulling the Timbers to within a goal om the 56th minute, then Jose Valencia’s low shot in the 83rd minute rebounded in off New York defender Jámison Olave to secure a 3-3 draw.

Full match report will be posted on Monday.

The day has come to idle the site (mostly)

As I announced a few weeks ago, I am officially idling this site today (mostly), and am doing so for the Talk Timbers message board.

You can read the announcement thread there for more of my reasoning why I am doing it, but I felt the time for the relevance of the board and my site had passed, so it was time to turn them into a historical document and move on.

For those who have asked, I do intend to keep the board and website available and will retain ownership of the SoccerCityUSA.com domain, so the archives should always be available.  I will occasionally update this site (and will keep the results column down the left side updated for this season), but for the most part this site is idling as well. I am working on another Portland blog that will occasionally have Timbers content and will post that link on here when it’s up.

To those of you who have been supportive of the site and my efforts, and who have also been very complimentary and supportive of my decision to move on, I thank you and repeat that this entire endeavor has been my honor, and I’ve enjoyed every minute and hope to get the chance to say hello to many of you frequently as I find my seat in the north end.

There were also a well-known few who tried so hard to bring the board down a few years ago, and who couldn’t resist the chance to kick me on the way out when I announced my decision to shut the board down, I wish you good luck as well, and I can proudly say that your attempts failed as I am leaving on my own terms.

To all Timbers fans old and new, I thank you and remember when you root, you root for the Timbers!

RCTID all!

End of an era, I am idling this site

I am officially announcing that this site will go idle.

While I have very much enjoyed maintaining this site and the accompanying message board for the past 10+ years, the majority of Timbers fans have moved on to other formats for communication, and it’s time to turn this site into a historical record and move on.

This site and all it’s stories and photos will remain though, and a link on the right side (The Timber Mill – USL Archive) contains all the archives for the USL era of the Timbers.

When I started the SoccerCityUSA.com site in 1999 (at the time called Timber Rattlers, later The Timber Mill), it was to try to fill a gap where I didn’t think the team (or the sport) was getting the coverage it deserved, and I felt with access to a simple HTML editor and an old SLR film camera I could do something to help change that, though my career has always been in IT, not journalism.  I can feel good that I did my part during the early years and especially through the mid 2000’s when the team wasn’t even getting a single article in the local paper for Cascadia Cup home matches, and hope that I did my part to keep the interest in the team alive during those lean times until everything came together to finally bring MLS to the Rose City.  I also very much enjoyed having the chance to cover various other leagues and US National Team matches during that time, including the Women’s World Cup in 2003 and a Sunderland/Newcastle match in 2006.

The Timbers 2013 preseason continues Sunday, February 17 when they host San Jose at JELD-WEN Field on the first day of the four-team Timbers preseason tournament.

Timbers top Seattle 1-0 in preseason play in Arizona

The Portland Timbers rebounded from their first-ever MLS preseason loss to Kansas City by shutting out their Seattle rivals 1-0 in their third preseason game of the year in Tucson, Arizona.

It was trialist Mikael Silvestre who provided the lone Timbers goal when Seattle failed to clear the ball from their 18-yard box, and the Timbers defender’s shot was partially blocked on the way to net, but trickled in for the lone goal.

Timbers drop first-ever MLS preseason match, 1-0 to Kansas City

The Timbers run of undefeated play in preseason, which goes all the way back to April 3, 2010 when they lost to Kitsap while in the second division, ended Friday with a 1-0 loss to Sporting Kansas City in an exhibition match in Tucson, Arizona.

Jerome Mechack had the lone goal of the match in the 64th minute on a low free kick that eluded Timbers goalkeeper Milos Kocic.

The next preseason match for the Timbers will be against Seattle on Tuesday, February 5.

Portland Thorns women’s team set to debut in 2013

Alex Morgan at JELD-WEN Field vs. Ireland2013 brings the debut of something that many Portland soccer fans feel is long overdue: a top women’s league team comes to Portland as the Portland Thorns FC will be one of the founding members of the National Women’s Soccer League when they begin play this spring.

The Thorns already appear to have a strong roster for their debut season, with US National Team stars Alex Morgan, Rachel Buehler, and Tobin Heath being allocated to the Thorns, as well as Canadian team legend Christine Sinclair forming a strong core to the team.  Also on the roster as of February 1 are goalkeepers Karina LeBlanc and Roxanne Barker, defenders Marlene Sandoval, Luz Saucedo, and Kathryn Williamson.  Midfiders Amber Brooks and Nicolette Radovcic have also been announced as members of the Thorns debut roster.

This site will have match report coverage and photography throughout the 2013 season as Portland finally has a top-flight women’s professional team to support.

Timbers reboot: Looking at the 2013 season

As this site enters it’s 13th season, it returns from it’s customary off-season hiatus with a new-look Timbers, under new coach Caleb Porter, looking to recover from a disappointing 2012 season that started with high expectations, and high hopes after opening the season with a 3-1 win over Philadelphia. But big-name, big-money signing Kris Boyd never worked out under the coaching of John Spencer, with the Timbers first MLS coach being dismissed mid-season. So the roster has shaken up, and the first major reboot of the MLS Timbers has begun.

Timbers open 2013 preseason with 3-1 win

The new-look Portland Timbers, under new coach Caleb Porter, opened their 2013 preseason on Tuesday showing alot of attacking prowess, and some new faces combined with familiar faces for a solid 3-1 win over the Colorado Rapids in Tucscon, Arizona.

New signees Ryan Miller, Michael Harringon, Diego Valeri, Will Johnson, and Ryan Johnson started the first half, with Valeri showing Beckham-like free kick ability with a curling shot that slipped inside the right post for a 1-0 lead.

Milos Kocic debuted in goal in the second half, with trialists Mikael Silvestre and Michael Nanchoff also seeing action.  Kalif Alhassan was in his typical pre-season form with a tight angled shot giving the Timbers a 2-0 lead, and Jose Valencia showed the form Timbers fans had been waiting to see when he dribbled around the Rapids defense and placed a low shot inside the post for a 3-0 lead.  A late Rapids goal on a headed corner ruined the shutout, but the Timbers remain undefeated in their MLS history in preseason play with a 3-1 win.

US Women top Ireland 5-0 at JELD-WEN Field

The US Women celebrate the first goal in a 5-0 win over Ireland

The U.S. Women’s National Team put on a convincing performance on chilly night at JELD-WEN Field, winning 5-0 over Ireland on a first half hat trick by Alex Morgan, then adding two second half goals by Sydney Leroux.

Morgan started the scoring in the 24th minute, lunging at a shot near the top of the box, and sliding the shot past the outstretched hands of Ireland goalkeeper Emma Byrne.  Ten minutes later, Morgan added a second after Lauren Cheney dropped a nice pass to hear near the top of the box, and Morgan’s blast was again to the lower left corner, and the US led 2-0.  Just before the half, Morgan completed her hat trick, this time jumping on her own rebound and going just inside the right post this time, and the US would take the 3-0 lead into the half.

Second half substitute Sydney Leroux put the US up 4-0 in the 62nd minute as she got her head on a cross from Heather O’Reilly, with Byrne getting a piece of the header, but not enough to keep the ball out of the net.  Leroux added another in the 81st minute with a tight-angled shot from the Irish goalkeeper’s right that looked to be an easy save, but the ball slipped through and bounced into the net for the final goal of a 5-0 throttling of the visitors.
