U-23s fall at home in US Open Cup by 3-1 score

Eric Miller scoring the lone Timbers goal vs. PSA Elite

The Portland Timbers U-23s played their first ever US Open Cup match on Thursday night at JELD-WEN Field, and despite getting many scoring chances (and outshooting PSA Elite 17-7 in the second half), the Timbers managed only a lone goal, a 56th minute strike by Eric Miller in a 3-1 loss to PSA Elite.  Davis Paul had two goals for the U.S. Adult Soccer Associate side, while Christian Ramirez had the third.  PSA Elite features three former Timbers in Edwin Miranda, Luc Harrington, and Cameron Dunn (Dunn did not play).

The Timbers had much of the early possession, and in just the 2nd minute, had a great scoring chance of a corner kick, with Steven Evans ending up with an open look near the top of the box, but his high shot was tipped well over the bar by PSA Elite goalkeeper Trevor Whiddon.  Eight minutes later it was the Timbers with another good chance, with Roberto Farfan turning well to get an open chance inside the PSA Elite box,  but his shot was well over the crossbar.

Timbers draw another blank in Houston

The Portland Timbers seem to have solved many of their defensive problems, shutting out 3 of their past 4 opponents, and only allowing a single non-penalty goal.  But the Timbers have truly hit the skids offensively, with no offensive goals in their past 437 minutes of play, since a 23rd minute goal in Los Angeles on April 14, and only a single own goal vs. Sporting Kansas City since.

The Timbers defense did hold tough though, facing 17 shots from the Dynamo, and enduring a final good chance in the 87th minute when Calen Carr slipping in alone, but Troy Perkins charged off his line and was able to cut down the angle and deflect the shot over the crossbar.

The Timbers were also hit with the injury bug which seems to be catching up with them this year, with captain Jack Jewsbury leaving with a potential hip injury, and recently returned Mamadou Danso appearing to suffer a leg injury late in the match, though he stayed in as the Timbers had no substitutes left.

U-23s open with convincing 3-0 win over Fraser Valley

Emery Welshman scores to put the Timbers up 2-0

The Timbers U-23s opened their 2012 campaign on Friday night at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, and did so in convincing fashion as Mark Sherrod would score twice, and Emery Welshman would also score in a 3-0 win by the Timbers over the Fraser Valley Mariners in front of 1,257 on a beautiful evening in Portland.

It was clear even early on that the Timbers were going to have little trouble with their Canadian visitors, as the Timbers were able to go wide, and especially over the top, at will, and it only took 10 minutes for the Timbers to take the lead when Reed Matte attacked down the right side, and his low cross found Mark Sherrod open near the penalty spot, and his one-time shot beat Fraser Valley goalkeeper Mark Village, and the Timbers had a 1-0 lead.

A thrilling, frustrating, promising 0-0 draw with Columbus

Jack Jewsbury marking Columbus midfielder Danny O'Rourke

The Portland Timbers could feel better about having a much better performance on this evening than their last outing in Montreal, but despite many scoring chances, neither team could find the net and the match would end in the first home scoreless draw in their MLS history, in front of 20,438 at Portland’s JELD-WEN Field.

For the first eighteen minutes, the match showed signs it was going to be an open one, at least compared to the past few Timbers match, but with a lot of players in new positions, the play was chippy and hardly flowing.  Each team had a dangerous low cross that was easily controlled, and then in the 12th minute, the Timbers had a good chance with Darlington Nagbe charging into the box, but couldn’t keep the ball on his feet, and after both teams scrambled for the ball, and the Timbers asking for a penalty, the ball was eventually cleared.

70 minute soccer

The Portland Timbers have played 42 Major League Soccer matches as of today, and the one lesson that has to be learned from those matches is that they don’t end after 70 minutes.

In 13 of those 42 matches, including four of the last five, the Timbers lost points from not being able to hold a lead or draw starting in the 70th minute, and that totals out to 23 points lost. In contrast, only once in those 42 matches were they able to gain points starting in the 70th minute, and that was the last game of the season last year, when Futty Danso’s goal on the last kick of the season earned the Timbers a 1-1 draw at Real Salt Lake.

In 2011 alone, the Timbers dropped 15 points in the final 20 minutes, which means those 15 points lost (and 1 point gained by Futty’s goal) add up to 14 possible points in the standings, which would have been good enough to put them into 3rd place in the Western Conference with 56 points and easily into the playoffs.

And amazingly enough, the problem is largely one that takes place at home. 16 of those 23 points dropped have been at home, while 7 points dropped (and the one point earned back) have been on the road.

To put this all in some perspective, going into today’s game vs. Columbus, the Timbers sit at 2 wins, 5 losses, and 1 draw, a total of 7 points, and dead last in the Western Conference.  If the matches ended at 70 minutes, we’d be at 4 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws, a total of 14 points, and singing the praises of another solid start.

What a difference 20 minutes makes.

Timbers lose Perkins, then match in Montreal, 0-2

The Portland Timbers had experienced good results against their traditional USL rivals since going to Major League Soccer in 2011, especially on the road.  In 2011, they drew 1-1 with their traditional rival Seattle at Qwest Field, then beat their other USL rival Vancouver 1-0 at the opening of BC Place.

But that run of good results would come to a crashing halt when they faced the third of their traditional USL rivals, the Montreal Impact, as the Timbers fell 2-0 on two late goals, the first a penalty kick by Bernardo Corradi in the 76th minute, and eight minutes later on a goal by Sinisa Ubiparipovic.

The Timbers also lost goalkeeper Troy Perkins, who left with an injury not long before the first Montreal penalty kick when Montreal forward Sanna Nyassi (who once played for the Timbers in an exhibition match against Morelia) had his cleats expose as he lunged for a ball and cut Perkins across the nose. The Timbers keeper had to leave the match, with Joe Bendik seeing his first Timbers MLS action for the final 27 minutes, giving up the two goals in the process.

Expansion Montreal a familiar Timbers foe

On Saturday in Montreal, the 2011 MLS expansion Timbers take on the 2012 MLS expansion Montreal Impact, but these are two teams that know each other very well.

When the Timbers went up to Major League Soccer in 2011, there was understandably a lot of focus on the their traditional Cascadia rivals in Vancouver and Seattle.  But starting this season, another United Soccer Leagues rival has made the jump to MLS in the form of the Montreal Impact.  Though the Timbers did not play the Impact as many times as they did the Whitecaps or Sounders, the Timbers had a remarkable amount of success against the traditional USL powerhouse Impact, including an astonishing knack for winning on the road.  “We own Montreal in Montreal” was  a well known fact in the USL days, as the Timbers were 4-1-2 in Montreal, while they were 4-3-1 at home against the Impact.

Timbers add Scottish defender Steven Smith, waive James Marcelin

The Timbers have made the third roster addition in the past two weeks, as Scottish defender Steven Smith joins the Timbers.

Smith played nine seasons in Scotland and England, starting with 55 matches with Rangers, where his side won three Scottish Premier League titles during that time.  Smith was a teammate of Timbers forward for 4 1/2 seasons at Rangers, and he most recently played for Preston North End in 2011-2012.

The Timbers also announced that midfielder James Marcelin has been waived.  The Haitian midfielder was one of the United Soccer Leagues Timbers who came up with the squad to Major League Soccer, having joined the Timbers in 2010.  Marcelin was waived for what were said to be “non-soccer-related reasons.”
